Dear All ,
I am not religious and so my remarks are musical:
Hazan ,Cantor , Vorbaeter were reciters of the prayers for the
high holidays in the Shil (when it mattered) to make the prayer
    coherent and penetrating for effectiveness.
     This was done by singing.
If the singer had a good , strong voice and his "krechzen" was convincing
this was an attribute to be considered .
("Echzen and Krechzen" are groaning heart-breaking
      noises underlining distress).
He was beautifully dressed and had a funny hat and a good voice.
Judging by the outcome ,all of them did a lousy job.
Their "krechzen" didn't go very far , nor do any good.
As to voices , none of the mentioned matches Pavarotti.
