Dear Mr. Heger.

Pinie Chazen did not wear a special hat, just a regular black yarmulke.
Regards, A. Kogan

Subject: [Cz-L] hazen and cantor - shil and temple

There is some confusion, I believe, between these different concepts. Hardy
admitted not to have been religious and therefore he probably went only to
the Temple, where the assimilated Jews prayed on the High Holidays and to
say Kaddish after the death of a close relative. The were cantors with the
strange hat and an organ played at the service. I attended some services
there at the beginning of the school year when all pupils went to a Church
or to the Temple for the opening of the school year.
A Shil is something different, a totally different atmosphere and in most of
them the Vorbeter was a Hazen, who knew when and how to apply the
"krechzen" at the right moments and text of the prayer. In most of the
Shils the Hazen did not wear any special hat. In some Shils there were also
cantors, but no organ and no krechzen, just a pleasant high quality voice
and a good choir. I do not member whether Pinie Spektor wore the special hat
in the Chorshil.
Hope to have cleared up this matter to the satisfaction of all involved in
the discussion, perceiving some truth in every communication.
Paul
