The story of Ehpes....
Some years ago, after finding the Czernowitz-L list with the help of
Aizcic Sechter and after discussion with Listmeister Reisch, I modified
my little Czernowitz website to reflect the goings on of this list. I
think it was in 2002 that the list and the website became loosely
coupled together.
After several incarnations of URL's (addresses) for the website, I
decided to register my own domain name for the website. I needed to call
it something. I love Yiddish and wanted to call it something in Yiddish.
Call it something in Yiddish... call it something in Yiddish? That's it:
I'll call it 'something' in Yiddish. What is something in Yiddish? Ayen
Pey Ayen Samach = Epes. So, I tried to register www.epes.com. Bad luck;
'epes' was taken already. What now to do?
Insert a silent 'h' was my answer: epes = ehpes as far as pronounciation
is concerned even though the official YIVO orthography for
transliterating Yiddish into Roman/Latin characters says otherwise.
So, Ehpes it became and the rest is history.
Best,
jerome
