My mother (Cecilia nee Zacharias) tells me that her first cousin Mitzi (nee
Fenster) was a good friend and neighbour of Joseph Schmidt's cousin Bertha
Schmidt.
Bertha was a solicitor (rare achievement for a woman in those days) and
lived on Kuchemare Gasse.
After the war Bertha lived in Israel.
Is anyone familiar with any of these names/details?

I beg to differ. Sorry to disappoint you. The greatest chazen in Czernowitz
was, in my view, Pinie Spektor (Pinie der Chazen), originally at the Boyaner
Rebbe's court in Boyan and later with his wonderful choir at the "Chor Shil"
(not far from the Theaterplatz).
