Hi Andy
You are right that there are many opinions on historical issues, and nobody
can claim that he has the true solution or answer. However, there are some
historical facts that must be acknowledged as fundamental, and are not
included in the category of many plausible opinions.
Your assumption that "Jews have probably become more adept at assimilation
than any other group " seems to me contradicted by unequivocal facts. The
most amazing fact is the opposite: how the dispersed and persecuted Jews,
subsisted as a particular people and culture for such a long time, despite
the constant pressure and temptations to accept the religion/culture of the
people among whom they lived. No other people endured such conditions and
all ancient peoples and cultures disappeared, not physically, as for exampl=
e
the Egyptians to mention our neighbours (I live now in Israel). This
situation changed somehow with the penetration of the Haskala, the late
Jewish Enlightenment in the Jewish public.
The question of the topic how the Jews survived is extremely complex and
inappropriate for our website. In contrast with the first issue, the
opinions vary, as you rightly said.
I wholeheartedly agree with your praise of the work effected by Hardy and
Jerome.
Paul
