I think Herrengasse is not and can not be translated. The Vienna
Herrengasse ist ein Hund (not translatable) to ours. Ours was the
meeting place of young and old, Promenade on Sundays, men raising
their hats to ladies in their Sunday's best. (In Vienna a man can't
walk the without being accosted).
The hat shop is most interesting as every lady HAD to wear one, the
peasants wore kerchiefs (nothing to do with religion I think). What's
most interesting is the letter. The "Geschwollene Sprache" is just as
I remember having written letters when I was young to my elders. I
never spoke to my mother and aunts except in the 3rd. person something
like "Mamma die Tante hat angerufen und gebeten dass Mamma sie
anruft". (Mother auntie called and asked mother to call her back) I
was 18 or 20 when that changed to direct speech.
