  Dear Friends,

I'm a new comer to the Czernowitz group.

My name is Michael (Mechel) Surkis. We lived in Jucica Vecke. My
parents owned a Tavern ( inYiddish a Kreitchme).

My Fathers name was Shloime Surkis. My mothers maiden name was
Fruma Shpruch from a Village called Mihova near Lucavitz.

My grandfather's name was Zalman Surkis and grandmother was Chantzie
Kurtz. They had 3 sons - Shloime, my Dad- Mechel and Duvid Lei. They
came from the Mige.

On my Mothers side were Hersh Shpruch and Gitel Stier. They had 4
children - Berleib, Mendel, Fruma and Mariase.

We were 6 Children.
Sara Stentzler (Deceased) lived in Israel with her husband Avraham
Stentzler (Deceased) - they had two sons Meir and Ephraim.
Ruchel Oks lives in Brooklyn NY. She was married to Abe Oks
(deceased) Has 3 children Darlene, Irving, and Joel.
Pepi Holtzman lives in Israel - was married to Eli (deceased) has one son Avi.
Lea Bercovici lives in Israel - was married to Moishe (deceased).
Has 3 children - Shlomo, Malka and Etti.
Mendel (Deceased) was married to Rachel Avinachem - has 4 children
Ronit, Achikam, Shlomo, and Yinon.
I am Mechel Surkis, married to Eleanor Bloom Surkis - we have one son William.

I was 12 years old when we were deported to Transnistria. It took
about 6 Months of walking until we arrived to Bershad - through many
stops going across the Niester three times.

If you are interested I will be glad to give you a copy of the
testimony I gave for the Museum of Jewish Heritage in New York. For
the last 60 years I have looked for a picture of my late father. When
I was in the Army in Israel I took a few days off and traveled around
to all the places where the new immigrants were temporarily settled,
called the Maabarot and was lucky to find a picture of my late
Mother. I was about to give up on finding a picture of my father,
when I found out about your website. I pray and hope to find one.
It's not so much for myself. I can see his face in front of me to
this day, but I'd like to leave it to my son and grandchildren, so
they can really have a sense of who he was.

With best wishes.

Michael (Mechel) Surkis.
