Vama means indeed Customs in Romanian.
Today there are only three localities named VAMA in Romania:one in
Iasi county, one in Satu Mare county and one in Suceava county.Vama
near Campulung(Moldovenesc) better said on half way between Campulung
and Gura Humorului, is the biggest one and its coordinates are to be
found here:

The cemetery photos are of course from Vama (Wama) in Suceava
county,in the past part of southern Bukowina. The history of Vama has
to be associated with the history of Campulung.
The first written testimony about Campulung and Wama dates from 1411
when the prince Alexandru cel Bun(the Good) donates the village of
Wama,near Campulung,to the Moldovita Monastery.
Campulung is located on a strategic position as it lies on the road
crossing the Carpathian mountains between Transylvania and Moldavia.
In October 1777 Bukowina became part of Austria and was under military
administration until November 1786 when the military administration
was replaced by a civilian one and attached to Lwow Galicia.
This aroused much protests from local people so from 1790 Bukowina was
no longer part of Galicia, nevertheless the administration remained
under Galician jurisdiction.
1794 was the year when Vienna officially recognised the status of
market town to Campulung.
I think this has to do with Jewish settlements in that area(first half
of the 19th century).
Some of names on the headstones in Vama
cemetery:Lehrer,Rachmuth,Bergman,Krumholz,Sand.......and others.
These are indeed remnants of vanished Jewish communities, nevertheless
to those who are interested in genealogical research in that area:you
should take in account that you might have some forgotten relatives
there.

Hannelore
