Dear Czernowitzers,
Sasha Wolloch was in Czernowitz very recently, visited the cemetery, took
many photographs and talked to Dr. Bursuk about the work which still needs
to be done.
I have put the photographs taken by Sasha, some older photographs, which
illustrate the "before and after" look of the cemetery and two maps; one
showing the location of the area cleared and one, the proposed next areas to
be cleared on a Picasa web album which you can access at:
http://picasaweb.google.com/MReiferTaylor/CzernowitzJewishCemeteryApril2010#
As of now, 3.5 hectares of the cemetery, have been cleared of sapling trees.
The area cleared, is a rectangle, bordered on the east by Zelena street,
On the west - by the North-South path, which runs between areas 34, 52,
61....and areas 35, 51, 62...
On the south - by the main path of the cemetery, which starts at the Zelena
street entrance and is at right angle to this street.
On the north, by the fence which runs along the border of the cemetery.
The size of the cemetery is 12.5 hectares, CJCRO currently has enough funds
to pay for another 2 hectares to be cleared and Dr. Bursuk has managed to
find workers who will start working on these 2 hectares this month. The two
groups of volunteers who will be working at the cemetery this summer, might
clear another half hectare, which means, that we can be sure that by the end
of the summer, 6 hectares - almost half of the cemetery, will be cleared of
sapling trees and bushes.
Yes, almost half the cemetery will be cleared, but half of it will still be
like a jungle and the longer we let the sapling trees grow, the larger they
get and the more work it will be to cut them down.
Clearing 6 hectares was made possible by the work of volunteers,
who mostly have no family-, or emotional ties to this cemetery and by
contributions generously given by about 50 members of this list and by their
friends and relatives.
I would like to ask another 150 people to join those who have contributed so
far, and ask them to make their contribution as soon as possible.
Those of you living in the US, make your checks out to CJCRO and mail them
to:
Miriam Taylor
3712 Brownridge Rd.
Bloomington, IN 47401
Those of you living in Europe, Canada and Australia please send your
contribution via Western Union, to the same address as above.
If you live in Israel, please contact Berti Glaubach at:
<bertigl_at_windowslive.com>
You can of course also wire transfer your contribution, directly to the
account of CJCRO at J.P.Morgan Chase, but the combined fees for wire
transfer for sender and receiver are about $60, so please send your
contribution via wire transfer, only if your contribution is $500 or more.
Please help preserve the burial place of your grand- and great-grandparents,
while it is still possible to do so.
Mimi
