Thank you Shulamit for joining,
You write :
"He also had an odd superstition - if he sewed an article of clothing while
I was wearing it, he made me chew a piece of thread.
Has anyone heard of that?"
If I know this practice ? You must be laughing.
I have chewed thread everytime some sewing was done on my clothes.
I also know of dreadful cosequences that occurred to people
who disregarded this precaution.
Their minds were sewn-up and they were left feeble- minded
for the rest of their life.
All this could easily be avoided by a little thread-chewing.
