I wrote to Peter Elbau, the most knowledgeable member of our list about old
Czernowitz city plans, maps and documents and asked whether he could find
out more about the little garden next to the Tempel.
According to Peter, this space was meant for a small house for the
keeper/guardian of the Tempel. This house was never built because of lack of
money, but this piece of land, clearly belongs to the Tempel and would be
suitable as a memory garden for Joseph Schmidt and other people associated
with the Tempel.
