When we first joined the Soviet Union , comrade Stalin was Party Chairman.
Then came war and the wall posters called him : "Macelarul din piata
rosie," that is " Butcher from Red Square " showing him in a bloody
apron brandishing a bloody axe.
Very confusing.
On the radio there were songs like:
" Si din pielea lui Stalin, facem ghete la Berlin",
meaning :" From Stalin's hide, shoes we make in Berlin! "
And "Din Crimea peste mare" from a longing soldier in rumanian Crimea.
Then came winter of 1942 and the rumanians stopped singing.
In 1944 when the Soviets came back ,Stalin was a Marechal and
Generalissimo.
The "Sun of peoples".
Most revered was his mustache. We called it "Stalin's Vontzies".
Vontzies is a yiddish word originating in Ukrainean.
It is in plural : A man usually had 2 vontzies one to the right ,the
other to the left of the nose.
Criticizing Stalin was not very advisable unless you wanted
to
visit regions beyond the arctic circle .
Therefore you better be quiet.
But people expressed their opinion by stroking their imaginary
mustaches. (Vontzies that is).
Because walls had ears.
