 Dear friends,

Your mails mentioning the name "Chajes", brought back to my memory my 2 1/2
years a s apupil of the first, second and part of the third schoolyears in
the School of the Juedische Kultusgemeinde in Vienna (1936-Januar1939). This
school was, and still is, located in Kastelezgasse, beim Augarten im II
Bezirk, had been named after Vienna's adored Oberrabiner: Zwi Perez Chajes.
Zvi Perez Chajes, born in Brodi, was the Jewish Communitiy's Chief Rabbi
from 1918 till his dearth in 1927.
He was burried in Vienna, but after the establishment of the state of
Israel, his bones had been brought to Israel, and now he is burried in the
old cemetery of Tel-Aviv, in Trumpeldor street.

2) Also I, in Vienna, had lots of fun, sitting on my grandfather's knees,
singing with him the "Hoppa Hoppa Reiter, and falling into the Graben and
into the Sumpf.......

3) I do not remember who asked for a recipe of boiled potatoes and boiled
eggs.
Here it is: 6 medium potatoes boiled in skins; 6 hard boiled potatoes; 3/4
lb butter; breadcrumbs; 1/2 pint sour cream, salt & pepper to test.
melt butter and line casserole with 2 tablespoons. Sprinkle with bread
crumbs. Put a layer of sliced potatoes, layer of sliced eggs; seasonings,
melted butter and seasonings. Continue layers until all ingredients are in
Casserole. Pour sour cream on top. Bake in 375 degree oven about 1 hour.

Imediately underneath this recipe in my book, one can find: "Potato
Pancakes." And it is exactly what you and I call potato latkes.....

The source: "Hungarian Cookery in the United state", published in 1955 by
the "first Hungarian Lutheran Church, New Brunswick, New Jersey"........

ve'hamevin - yavin......
