I'd forgotten Hoppla Hoppla Reiter even though I bounced my own kids to it and also my grandson who by now could bounce me. He is fighting forest fires in Arizona this summer and goes back for his last year of college next fall.
But all the bringing up of rhymes brings to mind another one that I recall but can't remember where I got it - perhaps in school -
Herr von Hagen
Darf ich fragen
Welchen Kragen
Sie getragen
Als Sie lagen
Krank an Magen
Vor acht Tagen
In der Stadt zu Kopenhagen
This should be a popular lyric in contemporary music where they take a single phrase and repeat it eight hundred times.
But who remembers Max und Moritz and Strubelpeter and Hans in Gluck and the Karl May books? Children's literature of the day could be gruesome - Max und Moritz ended up being ground up in a mill into little kernels and then eaten up by ducks or geese. They'd have the law down on such an author today. But we forget the gruesome parts and laugh over their rascality.
