The picture of Herrengasse makes me downright jealous. It never looked this good in our day. But we had only black & white photography. It looks better than anything I can think of in New York, Los Angeles and Toronto. How I loved those cobble stone streets. They spell solidity, permanence. Florists in Cz today must be doing very well.
Hardy, you've already been contradicted on the antisemitism in Cz issue. I have to add to that. In primary grades I don't recall thinking of differences in people or religions, maybe because we were not religious to begin with. Now that I think back, my favorite friend was Aurel, a Romanian kid whose father was a big macher in the army.
Years later, in Toronto, dad found an old business associate from Cz in Toronto, a Romanian married to a Swiss woman. They frequently got together, in fact, dad spent his last New Years with them. Now that I think back, I always had the feeling about the man's wife being an antisemite but she was not a Czernowitzer. She was Swiss.
I was surprised by a cousin in Cleveland telling me that his father, a violinist in Cz, got fed up with the antisemitism in Cz and moved to New York in the late 1920s. He must have had different experiences.
All in all, I have the impression that prior to the war, Cz was about as good as one could get in Europe in inter-religious relations.
