The photo of the elderly women ("girls" is obviously intended to be
sarcastic) reminded me of the description of Czernowitz in 1938 by the
English writer Sacheverell Sitwell in "Roumanian Journey". Sitwell, one of
three siblings of some literary fame, gives a ferociously anti-Semitic
description of Northern Romania, in particular of Czernowitz. After
comparing some parts of Czernowitz with a Walpurgisnacht, he reluctantly
writes "And yet, all the same, Cernauti has its qualities. The women are so
well dressed. Often, the small children are beautiful." Some things have
changed on the Herrengasse in 72 years.......
