Dear Sharon & Gail,
Thank you for your notes. The Kulas are, as near as I can tell, from the
Bukovina. I recognize Campulung (Kampolong - in the course of the Bukovina
changing countries, the spellings of places changed as well). As well, I
found something on the J-Gen site that Kula landholdings date back to 1808
and earlier.
I would be interested in contacting your rabbi - maybe he is family.
Gail: My mother's father was Max Kula - I was never able to get past that
point apart from a reference to a Norbert Kula, a pharmacist and the Kulas
of the 1808 listing. Max and his wife Regina (Rachel) escaped to Cyprus via
Constanta -Constantinople, and thence were interned on Cyprus where Max
passed away - the third Jewish grave on the Island. Regina was hooked up
with her younger daughter (my mother's sister) in Palestine and came to
Canada about 1950 - she died in 1964. My mother's sister and husband and two
children followed a year or two later. They became very frum. The daughter
became a pharmacist too (UToronto) but married a rabbi/weapons scientist and
moved to Baltimore. The son stayed in Toronto. Both have l-a-r-g-e families.
It appears that there is some family connection - Leib-Max. If you have any
more information, or a family tree or names of places, that might help.
One final note. I have a collection of letters from my parents here,
starting September 4, 1939 to parents and family in Romania and France,
ending in 1943, that is all in German. I have been able to get a few letters
translated, and they make my hair stand on end. I would like to donate them
to an archive, but I do not want them left in a box to gather mildew. It
occurred to me the other day that there might be a Jewish publishing house
that could be interested. The collection includes "business" letters - my
father was allowed into Canada because he had money and had promised to set
up and create jobs. Any ideas ??
Bob

I know of a Rabbi Milton Kula who lives or lived in the Woodbridge, New
Jersey area. He was the Rabbi who married me when I married my first
husband.
