[Cz-L] Czardasfuerstin

I can't resist from adding a reminiscence to the current Czardasfuerstin
singalong.

The much awaited tour of the celebrated Kievskyi Derzhavnyi Operetnyi Teater
(Kiev State Operetta Theater) came to Czernowitz during June 1941.
Unfortunately, this tour was affected by two tragic events: the deportations
to Siberia on the 14th and the German attack on the 22nd. I was able to
obtain a ticket to the Czardasfuerstin (renamed "Silvia") and on that
evening at the Nationaltheater I tried to transpose myself into my father's
world as a student at the University of Vienna. Indeed, Kalman's beautiful
music was like a healing salve to my ears, exposed for a full year to the
pervasive patriotic songs of Tre Tankisty, Moskva Moja, Suliko, Tachanka,
etc. But then, suddenly, it was all undone: when the orchestra played the
introductory melody to "Machen wir's den Schwalben nach und bauen wir uns
ein Nest..." and the singers then chimed in with "Zrobemo jak lastochky
zbudujemo hnizdo....."! Emerich Kalman plus zbudujemo hnizdo was the perfect
dissonance.
