Dear All and in particular, dear new members,

Until the summer of 2008 the Jewish cemetery of Czernowitz was in a terrible
state of neglect; weedy trees, bushes, vines and annual weeds created an
impassable jungle, which not only hindered access to the graves, but was
actually damaging the gravestones.

In the summer of 2008, SVIT Ukraine held a work-camp in Chernivtsi to clear
part of the cemetery of the weedy vegetation. Volunteers from many different
countries participated in this work-camp and they managed to clear a small
section of the cemetery. In 2009 both SVIT Ukraine as well ASF of Germany
held work-camps to clear the cemetery. These organizations and the
volunteers they brought to Chernivtsi worked very hard and they are to be
commended for the work they did and are also doing this year (2010).

But the Czernowitz Jewish cemetery is very large, about 11.6 hectares, which
is equal to about 30 acres and cannot be cleared completely by volunteers
working for a few weeks a year.

That is why some of us founded an organization who's only purpose is to
restore the Czernowitz Jewish Cemetery. This organization is called:
"Czernowitz Jewish Cemetery Restoration Organization", or CJCRO
Through an old time Czernowitzer, Dr. Josif Bursuk, who lives in Chernivtsi,
we hire workers to cut down the weedy vegetations and try to convince the
city authorities, to spray the cleared areas with herbicides and cut down
the old trees which are in danger of breaking and damaging the graves on
which they would fall.

The officers of CJCRO are:

Miriam Reifer Taylor President USA
Berti Glaubach Vice President Israel
Alexandre Wolloch Treasurer USA
Wolfgang Schaechter Secretary USA

All who wish to know more about CJCRO, or wish to join as members, please
write to Miriam Taylor <mirtaylo_at_indiana.edu> or to:
Wolfgang Schaechter <wolfgangs_at_comcast.net>

So far, the contributions we have received from members of this list as well
as from former Czernowitzers and their descendants, has paid for having more
than half the cemetery cleared. To be more accurate: as of now and including
the areas cleared by the volunteers, 6.3 hectares of the cemetery are
cleared and by the end of the summer 7.4 - 7.5 hectare are expected to be
cleared.

The city administration has repaired the fence around the cemetery, sprayed
most of the area cleared with herbicides and cut down some of the old trees.

Clearing the remaining part of the cemetery (about 4.2 hectare) will cost
$8400 - $9000. Currently CJCRO only has $1500 in its account.

Some members of this list have been very generous and contributed larger
sums or have contributed repeatedly, but the total number of contributors is
far lower than the number of members of this list would lead one to expect.

I am once more asking all members of this list, whether old or new members,
to contribute to the restoration of the Jewish cemetery of
Czernowitz/Chernivtsi. Please also inform you Czernowitz friends and
relatives and ask them to contribute.
