I am going to Czernowitz in 10 days, currently I am still at home in
Bloomington IN.
I would not say that I am supervising the clearing of the cemetery.
A group of volunteers organized by SVIT Ukraine will be working in the
cemetery.=20
This will be the third summer that SVIT Ukraine organizes such a work-camp
and I like=20
to be there with the volunteers, to tell them about life in Czernowitz
before WW2 and=20
about Jewish customs and folk art.
I feel I owe them at least this much, they come from all over the world, bu=
t
usually=20
there are no Jews among them and no descendants of Czernowitzers.

The volunteers are provided with a place to stay and some money with which
to buy groceries,
 but they have to cook for themselves and each of them has to pay for their
travel to Chernivtsi and back.
Occasionally local young people, both Christian and Jewish, join the
volunteers=20
in working at the cemetery, they too should be thanked and shown
appreciation.

Christian Hermann, who introduced me to the idea of volunteer work-camps an=
d
has been=20
of immense help in establishing a connection with the volunteer organizatio=
n
AFS Germany=20
and SVIT Ukraine, will also come to Chernivtsi as he has done for the
previous two summers,
in order to help the volunteers.
