[Cz-L] Obituary for Albert Thau

Albert Thau
1925-2010

We learned with sadness about the death of our friend Albert (Toto) Thau
in Vienna, Austria on July 28, of a heart attack. He was laid to rest at
the Jewish Cemetery in Vienna.

Albert, a member of Czernowitz-L, was born in Czernowitz on January 6,
1925, the son of Shulem and Lea Thau. He attended the Liceul Aron Pumnul
and Secondary School No. 16 in Czernowitz and received the mechanical
engineering diploma from the Bucharest Polytechnic Institute.

A survivor of the Ghetto and the Romanian fascist regime, he left for
Romania in 1946, during the exodus of the Jewish population from
Bukowina. His only brother died of a brain tumor and his mother was
killed by a streetcar. He managed to escape from communist Romania to
the West during the fifties and after a short stay in Duesseldorf, West
Germany, he emigrated to the United States and settled in New York.

Albert is survived by his wife Dr. Rosemary (Brixi) Thau, a retired
research director at the Population Council at Rockefeller University,
New York. He worked as an engineer at Bechtel and Union Carbide and
pursued graduate studies in economics at the New School, New York.
Traveling, often to remote places, was his lifelong habit and he
remained an avid skier till this year.

Toto was indeed a renaissance man who managed to retain the humor of the
city of his youth and who became the link between members of our
generation scattered throughout the world. He will be missed by his
friends and colleagues.
