Hi Hardy and all!
I also remember the Harbus - I believe I heard the word in Bucharest, because I was probably too small before leaving Czernowitz.
BUT, in 1975 I was quite surprised to hear the word <Karbus> in Istambul: a guy was selling watermelons and praising them loudly around. I was then told by some local university people that <(KH)arbus> is a word of turkish origin... By the way, you certainly know that turkish, hungarian and finnish are related and are non-indoeuropean languages...
In addition to the above, I would like to mention that, although I left Czernowitz as a very young boy (not yet four years old) I also remember the tunes of the Czaerdasfurstin, probably sung thereafter in Paris by my parents: "Machen wirs den Schwalben nach, bauen wir uns ein Nest...", "Die Maedis, die Maedis, die Maedis vom Chantant...", etc.
