Dear Enrico,

For this, you have to do some genealogical research, beginning
with your grandmother's family and then going back further.

It's a good bet that if your grandmother spoke Yiddish, she was
Jewish.

Start by going into the JewishGen site http://www.jewishgen.org/
and then register on the JGFF (FamilyFinder), enter your names,
etc., and then do a search to see if anyone is researching your
grandmother's family. If you do see one or a few people, you
can contact them and compare details.

Also do a search on Family Tree of the Jewish People (FTJP)
on the JewishGen site to see if anyone has entered something
that might correspond to your grandmother's family.

Good luck!

Merle Kastner

Subject: [Cz-L] Altmann

Hi,

I recently joined this mailing list in the hope of shading a bit of light on
my family's past.
My grandmother was named Johanna Altmann. she was born in the city of
Czernowitz in 1907 and emigrated to Innsbruck in 1914.
Later in life she met my grandfather and emigrated to Udine (Italy), city
where my mother and I were born. Unfortunately she died before my birth.
She was daughter of Johan Altmann and Matilde Rusch.

My current partner is Jewish and she thought that my grandmother's surname
might be Jewish as well.
I had never thought about this possibility before as I grew up in an
evangelic church in my town and had almost no information on my
grandmother's past.
By enquiring my mother I could only find out that she did speak Yiddish but
have no further information.

I would much appreciate if anyone may have some information related to
Altmann's family that may help me clarifying my origins.

Many thanks,

Enrico
