Since I am a recent addition to the group I wish to describe my family and h=
istory.
My parents from both sides and grandparents were born in Czernowitz. I was =
born in Czernowitz in 1931.
My father, Marcus Garfunkel had brothers and sisters who left in the 1920th=
. Jacob and Adolph to the U.S. and, Malzia (married name Marcus) and Carl m=
oved to Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
A brother Schmiel Garfunkel remained and lived in Czernowitz, as did we.
=A0
My mother Frieda Blumengarten married Marcus Garfunkel in 1928.My mothers p=
arents were also born in Czernowitz. She had a sister, Susie Donenfeld and =
a sister Rosa Gruber, -a brother David=A0Blumengarten and a brother in Buca=
rest, Nashu.
=A0We lived on the Bahnhoffstrasse in a corner with another street (I forgo=
t the name). Father had a business of wood and coal (Holtz und kohle lager)=
. The Soviets came in in 1940 and I was in third grade.
In 1941 the Nazis came and we were moved to a Guetto.6 or 8 weeks later we =
were send to Transnistria by cattle car and remained in Moghilev-Podolsk fo=
r two years. Then we were marched to Skazinetz. We escaped 3 month later an=
d returned to Moghilev.
We were liberated in 1944 , my dad was taken to the soviet army and mother =
and I walked back to Czernowitz. I am an only child. We stayed a year in Cz=
ernowitz and in the begining of 1945 we were permitted to return to Romania=
.
We settled finally in Timisaoara. Two and a half year latter we travelled t=
o Paris France. Stayed in Paris about a year and moved to Rio de Janeiro fo=
r 2 month. Subsequently we settled in Quito, Ecuador.
I finished my secondary education and completed Medical School in Quito Ecu=
ador.
Married in 1954 to Erika Baier from Papenburg, Germany and had a son David.
In 1958 we came to the U.S. and after internshipin New Jersey and Residency=
in Cincinnati and Boston, I settled in Dayton Ohio, practicing Radiology a=
nd Nuclear Medicine until the end of this June.
I have never been back to Czernowitz and would really like to join a group =
going there for a visit, if I can make it. My grandparents are burried in t=
he cementery, there.
