Dear All,

As of August 18th, when I last was at the Czernowitz Jewish cemetery, I can
report that the situation there is as follows:

The whole northern section of the cemetery, to the right of the main path as
one enters the cemetery from Zelena street has been cleared of sapling
trees. The size of this area is about 7.3 hectares. The volunteers from both
ASF Germany and SVIT Ukraine with the help of one of the cemetery workers,
this summer cleared areas #1 and #2 of the cemetery, which are along the
fence and south of the entrance to the cemetery from Zelena street. This
section measures about half a hectare. The remaining areas of the cemetery,
about 3.8 hectares, or 38 000 square meter, or 38 Dunam, still have not been
cleared. It will cost about $7600 to have the sapling trees and bushes
growing in these areas cut down.

The weedy vegetation at the cemetery consists of sapling trees, bushes such
as Black Alder, various vines and creepers and weeds such as grasses and
stinging Nettles. When the volunteers or CJCRO paid workers clear an area,
they cut down the sapling trees and bushes and pull off the vines growing
over the stones. They do not dig up the roots of these plants.
To ensure that the trees, bushes, vines and perennial weeds do not grow
again from the cut stumps, it is necessary to kill their roots by means of
suitable herbicides. The supply of seeds from mature trees and bushes also
needs to be halted. This spring and summer, the cemetery administration,
did not spray with herbicides any part of the cemetery. This resulted in
bushes and vines sprouting from their roots in all areas cleared last fall
and winter as well as early this spring. The bushes and vines were often
quite high and in combination with stinging nettles made access to some
areas very difficult. But this vegetation is easily cut with shears, or even
snapped by hand, it is definitely much easier to remove than the dense
growth of sapling trees which needed to be cut with a chain saw and removed
one by one.

Areas of the cemetery which were cleared in 2008 and later sprayed with
herbicides, were clear of sapling trees and bushes, but still had some vines
and weeds because vines need to be sprayed a number of times in order to
kill their roots and weeds mostly grow from seeds scattered by wind.

The cemetery administration now has herbicides with which to spray those
sections of the cemetery which have been cleared. The next month is a
suitable time to carry out this work and I have asked that they do so.

Later this fall, the cemetery administration will cut down 2 - 3 large trees
which scatter their seeds most abundantly.

Also this fall, CJCRO will have at least one additional hectare cleared of
sapling trees and bushes. As we receive additional contributions, we will
have additional areas cleared.
Early next spring we will ask the cemetery administration to cut more of the
invasive, seed scattering trees, in order to prevent a new crop of sapling
trees. Later in the spring we will ask that they spray all recently cleared
areas with herbicides.

I am fairly confident that both ASF and SVIT will have additional work-camps
in 2011. I think that I have also managed to convince members of the Jewish
community, that their children aged 12 and older, spend two days each spring
pulling out weeds which grow close to the gravestones.

I am in the process of arranging the photographs I and others took this
summer in Picasa Web Albums and as soon as I finish doing this, I will
invite you to look at them.

Mimi
