I have just finished reading "Lost, the Search for Six of Six Million." =
As a 2-G from Czernowitz, this book fills in many of the unanswered questi=
ons about daily life 1941-1944. As Joanna said the town Bolichow in not=
far from Czernowitz and so events there were most likely similiar to even=
ts in and around Czernowitz. It was especially interesting to hear them=
from the voice of a young (50ish) American who thinks like I do and has=
similiar background to many of us. I highly recommend it to everyone on=
the List.
Best Regards,
Melita Fuhrman Vickter

Dear Arthur,
Thanks so much for sharing your memories, experiences, and photos. I know
ow moving it was for me to be part of the SVIT cemetery group in 2008 and
o discover the graves of my ggparents, of whom I had known virtually
othing, and also records in the archives relating to my grandmother and
unt, whom I'd known well in the 1950's and 60's. I can hardly imagine what
t must be like to go back to the scene of such powerful and painful
emories.
If you feel comfortable sharing them, I would be interested in reading mor=
e
etails of your memories of those years. In any case, I hope you have or
ill pass what you remember along to someone who will preserve them. You sa=
y
ou are not a writer, but I think you have eloquently described your
xperiences.
In Massachusetts, where I live, a survivor (Sonia Weiss, she also wrote a
ook called I Promised I would Tell) created a local Holocaust Center, and,
couple of years ago, created what is called the Legacy Project. Volunteer=
s
re paired with survivors, whose stories are taped. The volunteer meets at
east once with the survivor, then creates a presentation of his or her
tory to be presented at least a couple of times a year, at schools,
ibraries, any appropriate settings. We also pledge to pass the committment
long to another person when we are no longer able to continue presenting
t. I have been paired with a woman in her 80's who survived the war hidde=
n
n France.=20
In the meantime, due to my visit to Czernowitz, I have learned more about=
my
wn family's experience, particularly a cousin whom I knew as a teenager,
ho now lives in Israel. Her terrible story of her trip to a camp from CZ=
as
child, with her mother was documented by our cousin Nick Martin, one of
he founders of this list. It's on the EHPEs site. I had never known
nything of her history, or the rest of my grandparent's siblings who were
ost.=20
I wanted to recommend to list members a very beautifully written book, in
nglish (but probably translated too), called The Lost, the Search for Six
f Six Million. The author, a New Yorker named Daniel Mendlesohn, went on=
a
uest to find out what had happened to his great uncle's family, who had
tayed behind when the rest of the family emigrated to the U.S. They were
rom Bolechov, between Lviv and Cz. I may have mentioned it here before,
nd a lot of you may know of it, but it bears repeating.
A couple of other things:
Thanks for the pictures of this year's group of volunteers. I wanted to
oint out that one volunteer, Marina, is a local woman who heard about our
roup when we were clearing the cemetery in 2008 and came to join us. She
elped me locate my relatives' graves on the last day of our stay, using
achetes, etc, and also offered to keep my family graves cleared. She
articipated last year too, I believe, so she would be the only person who
as worked on the project every summer. (not counting Mimi and Christian.)
The pictures on your album are wonderful. The one of your mother and you=
is
eautiful in addition to being so poignant.
Speaking of pictures, Mimi, the picture of you is also wonderful. And not
ust because of the beautiful ironwork, it is just a beautifully composed
icture, and a very nice one of you.
Regards to all, Joanna Liss
