Dear Merle and all Czernowitzers,

This message is in response to a question I received from Merle about the
meaning of the following acronyms:

CJCRO is the acronym for " Czernowitz Jewish Cemetery Restoration
Organization"

ASF is the acronym for "Aktion Sunnetzeichen Friedendienste"
A German non governmental organization which wants to atone for crimes
committed by Nazi Germany during WW2. They send volunteers to various
countries, to help survivors of WW2 and also help restore buildings and
cemeteries which are part of the heritage of the peoples adversely affected
by the German conduct of the war. In Czernowitz they have one volunteer
stationed for a year to help the old people of Hesed Shushana.
The website of ASF can be accessed at:

I do not know exactly what SVIT is the acronym for, but this too is a
nongovernmental organization, affiliated with SCI, trying to bring
volunteers from all over the world to help with various public minded
projects in the Ukraine.
You can access more information about SVIT Ukraine at:

Both organizations have done a lot to clear the cemetery of weedy vegetation
and we owe them our thanks. Please, all who are interested in seeing the
cemetery restored and maintained, write to both ASF Germany and to SVIT
Ukraine and thank them for their efforts.

Mimi
