The pavement of Czernowitz was cobblestones.
The quality was according to the importance and location.
1. Superior quality 10 by 10 cm stones squares flat surface
on Herrengasse and joining streets.
2. Medium quality 20 by 10 cm stones rounded surface .
3. Poor quality 20 by 20 cm round capped on which the carriages would
navigate like boats on a choppy sea.
4. No pavement : on dry days dusty dirt roads , on rainy days mud -
when the carriage would sink to the axle and horses to their knees.
Extra quality : In front of the Landesregierung across the
Franzjosephpark
there was a portion of wooden cobbles - the noise that
the
Fiaker made when going on stone cobbles would suddenly
disappear . This portion was short about 50 meters and
was
layed to avoid the clickety noise of hoofs on stone
cobbles.
This much about cobblestone.
