My mother, who left CZ in 1929 (Kula-Zuckerman) spoke Hoch (High) German, a
sense of great pride to her and something she majored in as part of the first
graduating class of UC Irvine (California) when she was in her 50ies). She also
spoke Romanian, some French, and Yiddish. My family was not wealthy or anything
special to my knowledge. My grandfather came back and forth from America
because he could not support the family in CZ. They were land managers, and he
lost his job because the owner of the land lost the property while
gambling....or so the story goes. Education and reading were passions of my
mother.

Subject: Re: [Cz-L] two questions
By the 1920ies most Czernowitz Jews spoke German to each other, this
included my family as well, but in the period of the turn of the century,
most of them spoke Yiddish.
