Jessica,

My mother's family only moved to Czernowitz after WW1, so I can't help you
with direct family knowledge of life in the city at the turn of the century.
They had previously lived in Eisenau, a tiny village in South Bukovina (now
called by its Romanian name Prisaca Dornei). My mother's grandparents ran
the small grocery shop in the village. You can see a picture of it here,
possibly taken at the time my family were there:

The shop is the small building with a door and two windows on the left,
behind the man. I could tell you more about Eisenau, but it is Czernowitz
that you want to know about.

I have found a couple of books written at this time, which have descriptions
of Czernowitz. They are quite brief - but interesting.

Then there is a fascinating and important paper which discusses the position
of Jewry in Czernowitz in considerable depth. Among other things it goes
into the language question in great detail. Highly recommended.

I hope you find something here of interest!
