Nothing new in this.
My parents told me that Itzig Manger, (Czernowitz's most famous Yiddish
poet) never combed his hair, that his clothes were "schmierig" and that on
top of all, he was frequently drunk.
In Czernowitz they said: "Die Kleider machen die Menschen" (the clothes make
the man). My mother also added, speaking of clothes and make up: "Entweder
es ist nich nötig, oder es hilft nicht" ( either it is not necessary or it
does not do any good).

We might suggest to all poets that they revert to the ancient Greek custom
of adorning themselves with laurel leaves wreaths, they would certainly
smell better than cigar smoke!
