Czernowitzers…

The Goldfaden Theater in Czernowitz announces on page 3 of "today's" (14.09.1932/2010) edition of "Der Tag - The Day" (http://czernowitzdaily.blogspot.com/) the "sensational" guest appearance of the Habimah Drama Group, presenting "Parnusse" (Yiddish "livelihood") by Sholem Aleichem. We'll learn from Helios Hecht, the then-life partner of Rose Ausländer, a few days later, on 17.09.1932/2010, that the Goldfaden Theater overstated these guest appearance, but the article is however remarkable.

Habimah ("The Stage") was originally founded in Moscow in 1917 as a theater company. The company performed their plays in Hebrew, the first professional group ever to do so. Led by Nahum Zemach, the company aspired to portray the problems of the Jewish people. Habimah had a few problems of its own; many members of the Communist Party opposed the existence of Habimah. Stalin, however, allowed the group to continue to operate. In 1926, the company went abroad on tour. The following year, in the United States, Habimah split. Zemach and several additional actors remained in the U.S., while others decided to settle in Palestine. Tel Aviv was to become the new home for Habimah. In 1945, Habimah moved into the building in which it now resides, in the heart ofTel A viv. Thirteen years later, it became the National Theater of Israel.

>From our fellow member Marcel Spiegler (Marcel, are you around here?), we learned, as posted in The Museum Of Family History (http://www.museumoffamilyhistory.com/cz-goldfaden-theatre.htm), that the Goldfaden Theater belonged to his uncle Max Reisch (BTW Bruce, are you related?). For many years it was an indoor theater in the Russische Gasse until it burned down. He then opened up the covered outdoor theater which was active until 1940. In the winter it was used as the entrance to the ice skating rink.

As a bonus, I've uploaded Habimah's "The Dybbuk - Between Two Worlds Funny Horror Puppet Theater Show" to the Media Player of the "Der Tag - The Day" (http://czernowitzdaily.blogspot.com/).

Enjoy the show and the story around Habimah at The Goldfaden Theater in Czernowitz!
