Since we do not seem to agree on where Czernowitz Jews came from and since
many of us are, or were blond and blue eyed, let me complicate matters
further:

Some of us probably are of Slavic origin. Occasionally a Jew would find
himself in a place where there were no Jewish single women and he would
marry a local woman and she would convert or hide the fact that she was not
born Jewish. During pogroms and normal life, from time to time a Jewish
woman was raped and if she became pregnant, the child was brought up Jewish.
But most interestingly, there seems to be evidence that during the
reformation, Polish Catholics first became protestants and when they were
persecuted for their beliefs, they fled to Moldavia and eventually converted
to Judaism.

In the article by Manfred Reifer "The Era of the Moldavian Princes", as
translated by Silverbush, the author writes:
