Prior to 1770 the area known later as Bukovina, including Czernowitz,
was part of Moldavia a vassal of Turkey, but with their own prince. At
this time Russia occupied this territory. They built a mint in
Tarnawa-Sadagora beginning in 1770. In 1774 this area was occupied by
Austria and officially became of Austria on August 31, 1774.

According to The Era of the Moldavian Princes by Dr. Manfred Reifer
this area was probably occupied by Jews since Roman-Dacian times
(Cecina=Czernowitz). In Monte Castro of Moldavia, in 1330 Jews had
their own section of the city and carried on trade.
Jewish hostels in the area at this time likely accommodated Polish
Jewish trade caravans and Jewish caravans from Constantinople. In 1408
prince Alexander the Good made a contract with Moldavia merchants with
        special provision for Jews.
Reifer states “Without doubt, there was already a Jewish settlement in
        Czernowitz” [in 1540].
Jews in the 1600’s in Moldavia dominated most business and trade. “The
Jewish merchants dealt with tobacco, cotton, rice, and foot wear,
supplies for farmers, fabric and fancy goods. They also engaged in the
cattle and grain businesses.” “In the 17th century, the wine and brandy
trade was an exclusive product and business monopoly of the Jews”,
which is where I probably got my name from.
        Sincerely
        Jack Likwornik [Liquornik]

P.S. The Jew survived the attacks from Chmielnitzki's hordes and
further attacks and even got a certain amount of self-government.
