The burnt - out Tempel during the war.
Damaged but intact.
From this stage rebuilding was an easy job.
Then came the Soviets and decided to eradicate the building.
They called in army sappers and started blowing up the building.
Because of the strong walls and inaptitude of the troops the
first explosions broke havoc to the city center.
All glass windows in the center shattered and walls shook.
They thought a new war had broken out.
They stopped this and decided to leave the building but
change its appearance.
They removed the cupola and added another floor and
changed the interior. Invested millions.
There is a big hall used as a cinema and a foyeur where
they sell ice cream and occasionaly hold clothes summer-sales.
A plate for Joseph Schmidt reminds you of its jewish past.
