Fred....I hear what you say,but I must disagree with much of it. Restitution
is not a local decision but a national government one. Czernowitz Ukrainians
initiated the Jewish Museum work. During the Poetry Festival they put a
light-image of the Tempel on to the current building. There are inscriptions
and plaques in Hebrew and Yiddish. There is a Jewish presence on the elected
City Council. In all my visits I have NOT found any evidence of
anti-Semitism,quite the reverse. On one visit to the University we met a
post-grad student who was very helpful and we then had an invitation to the
home of her parents who wanted to "hear more of the story of the people who
made our city what it is". Rav Kofmanski's synagogue ,established in
1923,survived intact and functioned and still does, and I know of no similar
survival anywhere else in Nazi Europe. There is a very highly-regarded Jewish
school. Czernowitz is twinned with an Israeli town. And the current
Czernowitzers are Ukrainian,so why would anybody expect them to have German
street names??? All the people I met there knew Celan,Auslander etc were
Jewish....but harping on their religious affiliation is not exactly
vital...would you refer to Shakespeare as"that Catholic or Church of England
or whatever" playwright??? I could go on..but that will do for a start!!

Dear Czernowitzer
Sadly I will side with Hardy regarding the callous disregard of Jewish past
and
the present actions.
It is a new kind of genocide where Jews have been uprooted ,you erase any
sign
of their presence
of their past. True there has been an exchange of population who have no
ties to
the city's past.
In true style the street names have been changed, the Jewish edifices are
being
used and renamed
so there is no mention of their owners. Nothing but nothing has been
returned to
the Jewish community.
The Temple has been burned and desecrated it has not been restored but used
shamefully for other purposes.
Yet, Churches have and are being restored to their former glory including
the
German. I would not call it
necessarily antisemitism but a calculated indifference to the Jews who gave
life
to the city. As for the persons
of fame or note you never hear the Jewish Poet or Actor but a name that does
not
tell the full story. They must
be Ukrainean. The indelible past of thousand of Jews who left a mark, who
lived
in Czernowirz for hundreds of years
who contributed to the vibrancy, culture and life to make Czernowitz  unique
but
paid with their life due to a murderous
well nurtured antisemitism is there a Memorial ???   I say no will there be
one
I doubt it.
The Austrian Rulers are remembered but not the Jews, they never existed it
is a
figment of ones imagination
Every act to remember is done by the pitifully remnant of survivors.
It is a private act by the survivor to remember the past. Kudos to Mimi's
magnificent effort but for how long???
An individual  currently would be polite and friendly one would not expect
otherwise it is a different time and different circumstance
but that should not detract from the fact that the city authorities do show
a
callous calculated disregard of the Jews

in Czernowitz past and present. Antisemitism in a new dress???
Juden aus dem Auge aus dem Sinn, Czernowitz widmet sich nur fuer Ukraina hin
Jews out of sight out of mind, Czernivcy dedicates only for Ukraine.
