Hardy,
You are right, The City of Chernivtsi municipality is to blame.
I did not mention the municipality, because I take it for granted that all
of us agree about this.
I do not know how much we can influence the municipality, believe me, I try.
While I am aware that they have more urgent problems, like unemployment,
homeless people, etc. I think that restoring and maintaining the Jewish
cemetery is both a cultural imperative and in the long run will profit the
city.
But we Czernowitzers, whether living in Chernivtsi or living anywhere else,
should fulfill our own moral obligations. "Im eyn ani li, mi li"?
(if I do not help myself, who will?)
German, Ukrainian, Slovak, Czech and Polish volunteers, by working to clear
the cemetery of weedy vegetation, show their interest in preserving what
physical heritage there is left of what once was Jewish Czernowitz. They
clearly do not behave, like some of their co-nationals behaved, two or three
generations ago. I am both grateful to them and have a lot of admiration for
them.
Mimi
