Re: The faces of Czernowitz for which I thank and applaud Merle and Jerome. Thanks also to Arthur's list of who-is-where-today. Your effort to me is as just about as interesting as the pictures themselves. It shows that Cz had its own Diaspora.
Overall, though, these pictures represent less than 20% of the group. We need to apprize all the others who have yet not shared their pictures. Also, it would be most interesting to see a breakdown by country of present residence of the entire membership. Many will doubtlessly be the offspring of Czernowitzer and it would be wonderful to see their faces as well as whatever photos they have of their ancestors.
I had a traumatic experience last night. I had an uncle, my father's brother, who would have been about three years older than dad. He lived in Transylvania. I never knew his real first name. We called him "Bandi." I only met him two times but remembered him well because he was the happiest looking person I had ever met. Always smiling or laughing. We had no idea of what would have happened to him. He simply disappeared during the war.
I went into the web site of Yad Vashem last night to get a breakdown by country of the Righteous among the Nations and impulsively went into their Shoa list where I found Bandi. My heart stopped when I saw hisname in print. He was killed in 1944 in Auschwitz. I was ready to start WW III. Many of you would know the pain of rage and sorrow on such a discovery.
The testimony on him came from a nephew of his named Peter Hendel or Handel. The database had both names. Peter would have come from Bandi's wife's side of the family. Her name was Ilona Handel. Peter would probably be my age, if still alive. In the Shoa database Peter is listed as not being a survivor, meaning not having lived under the Nazis and survived. Perhaps he was born later. He could be anywhere in the world. I'm going to try to locate him through Yad Vashem. If anyone has any ideas or suggestions, I would deeply appreciate them.
