Does anyone know the sequence of battles and conquests of Czernowitz and
vicinity during WW1? Who was mayor of Czernowitz in 1914 and in 1917 - 18?
When was the famine? Was it when the Russians held the city?
Both my grandfathers were conscripted into the Austrian army.
My maternal grandparents sent their oldest son, born in 1907, to live with
his grandparents in Borsa. My grandmother, with three children, one of them
a baby, fled to Budapest, where she had relatives. My father's family
remained in Czernowitz, because they had no one to go to.
My parents and their friends, occasionally spoke about "die Flucht" ( the
flight, in the sense of fleeing), but I do not know, whether people fled
because they were afraid of fighting taking place in the city itself,
because there was hunger or because the Austrian government encouraged them
to flee.
If anyone can describe the series of events, it would be very instructive.

How bad was the flu epidemic of 1918 in Czernowitz?
