Hello Yossi,

The pronunciation of Czernowitz Yiddish is quite distinct from the
pronunciation of the Yiddish spoken in other areas of Europe.
Recently when I attended a lecture on Yiddish as it is spoken in different
parts of Europe, I found that I could correctly identify a recording of
Czernowitz Yiddish, which the lecturer had recorded in Uman.

For instance the word for "from", in literary or Litvak Yiddish is "foon",
in Czernowitz we said "fin", the word "religious" usually pronounced
"froom", we pronounced "frim". In addition we Czernowitzers, are the Yiddish
speakers who are most influenced by our knowledge of German.
That is why we said Schul, pronounced Shool for school. In other areas they
might have said "shkola" or some other word, close to the local language
In Germany, Austria and Switzerland, native Jews had stopped speaking
Yiddish a long time ago.

This is one of the strange things about Czernowitz Jews; all of us who were
born in Czernowitz and vicinity, many years after it stopped being part of
Austro-Hungary, spoke and read German, even though we did not learn it in
school.
