Dear friends,
My grandfather, David Kastner, came to Canada at the age of
17 years, in 1900. Two of his older brothers were already here
and other siblings followed later. He married my grandmother,
Esther Miller, born in Philadelphia, in 1912 in Montreal.
When I was growing up, he never talked of his life in Radautz,
so I knew almost nothing about it and it wasn't until I started
doing family research in 1993 that I began to learn what I had
missed out on.
Since that time, I have read a great deal, visited older Bukoviner
relatives (some now deceased) and done all kinds of
research. I have found relatives all over the world, met a
number of them and am in touch with others - Europe, Israel,
South America, Canada and the USA.
I have learned of close cousins of my father's who died in Transnistria,
others who survived. These were the ones who stayed behind in
Bukovina. They all, in one way or another helped to fill
out the now-vivid picture I have of Czernowitz, Radautz and Bukovina
in general. Your stories, recipes, photographs have all contributed to this, too.
My cousin and very good friend, Bruce Reisch, was one of
the people discovered in my genealogical research. When
Bruce was starting the Czernowitz list, he invited me to join and
I immediately did.
I am now planning a trip to Bukovina in July, 2012,
following the IAJGS (International Association of Jewish
Genealogical Societies) Conference in Paris.
I credit the members of this mailing list for teaching me about
the rich life of the Jewish population of Bukovina - that I never
knew much about before and that no longer exists.
So many, many thanks to all of you.
Merle
