Definitely an unusual story about Yppen, and it is fairly tidy in that all
the action takes place in Judeo-Christian Western and Central Europe (unlike
my story of Ottoman Empire origins). Once inside the Austro-Hungarian
Empire and enjoying royal favor, once can imagine that it would be easy for
Baron Yppen to move to Bukovina at the eastern edge of the Empire. Thanks
for sharing. Dale

Dale, here's another one for you. My cousin's in Israel now, wrote me the
following: the Ippens have advised that in the 1700's, one of the Ippen
ancestors (not sure exactly whom), gave financial support to the Austrian
Empress Maria Theresa, who, in turn, named a square after him. This square
still exists today in Vienna and is called: Yppenplatz.
Here's what I have found so far... The Dutchman Peter Simon Baron van Yppen
was an officer (engineering lieutenant-colonel)of the Austrian and the Dutch
military contingent at end of the 18th Century. He owned a large area in
Ottakring, which he left in his will to a certain foundation for the
handicapped. There are in addition to the Yppenplatz, several other areas in
Vienna with that name, Yppenmarkt, a shopping plaza for example. He was
apparently from the Netherlands! I looked on Google but there is nothing in
English, only German, and not very informative. Somehow the Ippen family
came from the Netherlands and then via Vienna made their way into Cz.
