It happened on June 27, 1940, shortly after the Soviet ultimatum was
announced on the radio. I was visiting with my aunt who lived on the corner
of Waggase and Steingasse. Suddenly we heard a commotion on the street: a
man conforming with the characteristics of a Czernowitzer Hausmeister had
"nationalized" a full barrel of wine and was rolling it in the direction of
the Dreifaltigkeitsgasse, frequently stopping to operate the spigot. As the
Waggasse became steeper and the man became more inebriated, the barrel got
away and hit the curb. Red wine ran all over the cobblestones and many
onlookers rushed from their houses with pots and pans to salvage some of the
wine. On that day, the Waggasse deserved to be renamed Boulevard de
Bordeaux!
