Since we are corresponding about "IF" (if my grandmother would have had
wheels she would have been an automobile), I'll tell you what I would do if
I had the money. I would have bought the old hotel Bristol, which currently
is a dormitory for medical students and would have renovated it to be a
first class hotel. The furniture and decoration would be in the style of the
thirties. Another dormitory for the medical students could be built closer
to the university. I also would buy the building of the old Friedman
restaurant and open a new vegetarian and kosher restaurant named
"po Friedman" (at Friedman). Occasionally in Chernivtsi a taxi driver, whom
I tell to take me to the Jewish cemetery, will tell me how much he likes
Jewish food.

In the building of the Schwartzer Adler, where there is now a travel agency
and in which there once was my grandparents' store "Steinmetz Selchwaren",
I would, place the city tourist office, which would offer hiking trips to
the Carpathians, rafting on the Goldene Bistriza and skiing in Bila and
Cecina as well as poetry readings and concerts in the Musik-Verein and
"fiacre" architectural tours of Czernowitz.

Der Tempel would be rebuilt as a conference center, which would include a
memorial and study complex devoted to the culture and life of Jewish
Czernowitz.

The prayer hall at the Jewish cemetery would become a museum of traditional
Jewish gravestones design and archive of the burial registers.

At the university, I would endow a department of international relations and
peaceful coexistence.

And last but not least, I would completely clear the Jewish cemetery of
invasive vegetation, restore all the stones which need restoration, secure
all the paths and place markers indicating the parcel and area designation
of each section of the cemetery.

Anyone rich enough and interested to support my projects?

Mimi
