Some time ago, one of the members of this list wrote that some of the
tombstones were piled up somewhere in Czernowitz. If anyone remembers
where this pile of stones was, there might be a chance of still finding them
and saving them. These old tombstones, before 1860 or 1866 are both of
emotional value, as well as of historical and artistic value. None of the
people in Chernivtsi, I spoke to about this, seemed to know where they are,
but it is impossible that all of them would have vanished without a trace.

Hardy, if you are in touch with some of the people in Chernivtsi, who send
photographs to "live journal", could you post a general question to them,
asking where some of these old tombstones could be found?
At least one or two of them could be kept in the Jewish museum.
