My mother, Etka Strum Neuman, left this world in 1969, at the age of 57!
She would have LOVED to be part of this listserve, and boy, would she have
had a lot to say!
Although she was born and raised in Sniatyn, she spent the happiest years of
her life in Czernowitz. I hear my mother's words and my mother's angry
tone in every word of Anny Matar's detailed account of the two
occupations...After my father was taken away Etka gave birth to her second
child, a girl, and on June 7, 1942 the three of us were deported to
that hell of all hells, Cariera du Piatra, where my 30 year old mother left
her two children to slave at the rock quarry day by day while I was left,
day by day to wait for her return. I agree with Hardy, Anny has a
phenomenal memory, not only of the facts but also of their emotional
content. Mother also had some choice *Yiddish Klules* (curses) for her
oppressors; one that comes to my mind now is 'a mapule zol zai alle
trefen!'
