Eytan,
This not the area where, we from Czernowitz were deported.
This is a breakaway territory after the demise of the Soviet Union, located mostly in a strip between the Dniester River and the eastern Moldovan border to Ukraine.
This should not be confused with the area of Moglilev-Podolsk, Vinitsa and Bershad, where my family was deported.

There is an article in the New York Times

http://www.nytimes.com/2010/10/28/world/europe/28iht-letter.html?emc=tnt&tntemail0=y

about Transnistria, specifically about Angela Merkel's proposal to
Russia concerning talks about that part of the world:

"Mrs. Merkel’s proposal is that Russia, along with Ukraine, Moldova,
Transnistria, the O.S.C.E, the European Union and the United States,
revive the so-called 5+2 talks. These talks were stopped four years ago
by Russia and Transnistria. Moscow preferred bilateral negotiations in
which it could wield bigger influence."

Thought it might be of interest . . .
