Dear Hardy,
Thank you and Edgar very much for publishing the picture of the mazevah of
Meier ben
Jechiel.
His and all the stones around have been fantastically carved, very much
influenced of art of the first half of the 18th century. Although so far
away from central Europe there must have existed a near contact on different
levels. What a pity that so much has disappeared. Perhaps
there are some more pictures or even remains of this, Jewish past in
Czernowitz.
Thankfully,
Wolf Terner
PS: Here even the sceptics can see some of the stones of the Jewish Turkish
graveyard from before the Austrian takeover .
The same sceptics who had to learn that Maramures was and is a town in
Transylvania. Maramures even today, geographically, difficult to include
into Galizia.
