In the 11th century there was a schism between the eastern and western
Christian churches. The eastern church while holding to the same beliefs
as the western church, refused to accept the rule of the popes in Rome and
instead recognized the spiritual jurisdiction of the Greek Patriarch of
Constantinople.
Romanians and Ruthenians, both largely belong to the Greek Orthodox church.
