[Cz-L] Czernowitz and its people-what else?

Dear all,
Have just returned from a week's vacation (without reading any e-mail)
and was amazed to read Dov Friedman's story. We knew his uncle Froicik
quite well, a good friend of my uncle Mocca who lived in Caracas and now
in Miami, like Dov. Indeed, how he escaped is an incredible story, and I
loved to hear it again confirmed by Dov.
Froicik was a great entertainer, nobody could tell jokes like he did,
and he sang beautifully. He was always surrounded by friends, always in
a good mood, kind and gentle. He loved to eat and before going home for
lunch, he would stop somewhere and have a meal as an entrée, before
arriving home and pretend he was starving. We met him a few times in
Caracas and in Miami shortly before he died. He was a great personality.

Mimi - if you can, read Heinz Kehlmann's description of the market days
on Austriaplatz - a wonderful picture of the colourful mixture of
language, dress and people. He was Hermann Hesse's brother-in-law, his
wife Lilly being Ninon's Ausländer's sister. Both from
Czernowitz,friends of my parents.
The book: "So weit nach Westen - von Czernowitz nach New York " -
printed by Rimbaud (info_at_rimbaud.de). Another story of peace, occupation,
war, emigration. Some very realistic descriptions of war-and pre-war
time Czernowitz.
